The 57th Senior National Kho Kho Championship commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony at the District Sports Complex in Puri, Odisha. The tournament, running from March 31 to April 4, marks a historic milestone in Indian Kho Kho history as it is the first edition where all matches are being played on mats. With a record-breaking participation of 40 men’s and 40 women’s teams, this championship stands as the largest ever in terms of team entries. Addressing the gathering, KKFI President Sudhanshu Mittal emphasized the sport’s growing global recognition, stating, “Everyone associated with Kho Kho is part of one family. The sport is leaving its imprint worldwide, with the Kho Kho World Cup in India giving it a new identity. We are committed to securing Kho Kho’s inclusion in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games by 2030 and the Olympics by 2032. This will only be possible through the dedication, skill, and perseverance of our players, who are taking Kho Kho to new heights.”

Rajya Sabha MP Subhashish Khuntia, a former handball player, also expressed his admiration for the sport and its significance in fostering teamwork and unity among states.

Day 1 saw an action-packed schedule, with 56 matches played across different groups in both the men’s and women’s categories. A total of 190 matches—including 160 league matches and 30 knockout games—are set to be played throughout the championship.

This year’s event holds special significance as the first major national-level competition following the successful 2025 Kho Kho World Cup held in January in New Delhi. The global tournament saw participation from 39 teams representing 23 countries across six continents, with India emerging victorious in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
