Historic Kho Kho World Cup Takes Over New Delhi with Unforgettable Opening Ceremony

New Delhi, January 13, 2025: History was made on Monday as the inaugural edition of the Kho Kho World Cup kicked off in grand style at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi. With a vibrant and colorful opening ceremony, this landmark event brought together dignitaries, players, and fans from across the globe, united by their love for this indigenous sport.

Thousands of enthusiastic spectators packed the stadium as the sport took a major leap onto the global stage. Distinguished dignitaries, including Hon’ble Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Sports Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, IOA President PT Usha, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of J&K Shri Manoj Sinha, Rajya Sabha Member Shri Rajeev Shukla, and IKKF & KKFI President Shri Sudhanshu Mittal, came together to officially welcome players from 23 countries competing in the men’s and women’s tournaments.

A Ceremony to Remember

The ceremony began with a breathtaking sand art projection that paid homage to Mother Earth, setting a powerful tone for the event. A ceremonial parade of the Indian flag followed, evoking a sense of pride and unity.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the Kho Kho World Cup trophy for both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The lifting of the trophy cube was met with thunderous applause from the audience, marking a historic moment for the sport.

Spectators were also treated to a stunning dance performance showcasing India’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage. This was followed by a parade of the participating nations, with athletes waving to the crowd and soaking in the electrifying atmosphere.

Shri Sudhanshu Mittal, President of KKFI and IKKF, expressed his gratitude:

PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association, added:
“Kho Kho is not just a game—it is a testament to India’s rich heritage and legacy. This World Cup renews our passion for our indigenous games. Let us uphold the spirit of fair play and celebrate this tournament with enthusiasm.”

Union Sports Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the sport’s growing international recognition:
“I am proud that India is hosting this incredible tournament. Kho Kho, which originated in India, is now played in over 50 countries. With the efforts of Shri Sudhanshu Mittal Ji and the KKFI, we may soon see Kho Kho at the Asian Games and Olympics. I wish all the teams the best for the tournament.”

Finally, Hon’ble Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar lit the ceremonial torch, officially opening the tournament. In his address, he said:
“This spectacular start to the Kho Kho World Cup feels like the entire world is celebrating this sport. Kho Kho is an art that requires agility, speed, and cleverness. I am confident that our indigenous sports will reach even greater heights in the future. Best wishes to all the participants.”
