India to host Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship in March 2026

India to Host Inaugural Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship in March 2026

Over 24 Nations to Participate in a Landmark Event for the Indigenous Sport

India is set to create history once again as it prepares to host the first-ever Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship from March 9 to 14, 2026. The championship marks a major milestone in the global rise of the traditional Indian sport, with more than 24 Commonwealth nations expected to participate.

The venue for the event is yet to be finalised, with the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) currently in discussions with multiple states. Commonwealth Sport (CS) has already given its formal approval, clearing the path for India to host this prestigious inaugural event.

Modelled on the highly successful 1st Kho Kho World Cup held in January 2025 in New Delhi—which saw participation from 23 countries—the upcoming Commonwealth Championship will feature 16 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams, further elevating the sport’s global footprint.

This championship also comes at a significant moment for India, following the announcement of Ahmedabad as the official host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The decision strengthens India’s position as a global hub for traditional and emerging sports.

Speaking on the development, Upkar Singh Virk, General Secretary of the Kho Kho Federation of India, expressed optimism for the sport’s future on the international stage.

“We are in talks with several states for the finalisation of the venue. Ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, we are hopeful that this championship will prove to be a stepping stone towards Kho Kho’s inclusion in the Doha Asian Games (2030), Commonwealth Games (2030) and even the Brisbane Olympics (2032),” said Virk.

With the sport gaining recognition, structure, and international participation, the Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship 2026 is expected to be a defining moment—cementing Kho Kho’s position as a fast-growing global sport and opening doors to its inclusion in major multi-sport events in the years to come.
