Sachin Bhargo: From Almost Quitting to Aspiring for Kho Kho World Cup Glory

The Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) is preparing to make history with the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, set to be held from January 13 to 19 in New Delhi. This landmark event will bring together 24 countries, showcasing the traditional Indian sport on an international stage. Among the athletes vying for a place in this prestigious tournament is Madhya Pradesh’s Sachin Bhargo, a determined young star whose journey has inspired many.

Sachin, who hails from a humble farming family, has faced his share of struggles. Reflecting on his challenging past, he revealed how close he came to quitting the sport he now holds dear.

“When I was a kid, we lived in Dewas. But after my grandparents passed away, my family had to return to the village to manage the farm. It was a tough period. I didn’t know how I could continue my education or play Kho Kho. My parents wanted me to move with them, but I was determined to pursue my passion,” Sachin shared.

In a heartfelt recollection, he credited his coach, Praveenji Sante, for helping him through this tough time. “I called my coach in tears, asking for advice. He told me, ‘Pack your bags and come to my house.’ I stayed with him for a year, and that changed everything.”

Sachin’s dedication soon paid off. He caught the attention of Sumit Bhatia, head coach of the Telugu Yoddhas, who drafted him during the inaugural season of the Ultimate Kho Kho League. Later, Sachin earned his place in the national team, debuting at the 4th Asian Kho Kho Championship.

Now, with the World Cup on the horizon, Sachin’s excitement is palpable. “This World Cup is a huge milestone for Kho Kho,” he said. “I hope to get selected and play. It will mean the world to my family, my coaches, and all the people who have supported me. This tournament will showcase how incredible Kho Kho is. I want it to gain the same recognition as cricket, football, or hockey.”

He also praised KKFI’s efforts to incorporate sports science into training, which he believes is crucial for player fitness and injury prevention. “Sports science has taught us how to train effectively without overworking our muscles. This will not only improve performance but also reduce injuries,” he explained.

As Sachin prepares for the trials, his journey is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the transformative power of support. The Kho Kho World Cup promises to be a defining moment for the sport and its players, with Sachin Bhargo leading the charge toward global recognition.
