Kho Kho emerges as a powerful platform for challenging conventions and demonstrating prowess beyond gender lines.
In the realm of sports, particularly Indigenous games, a transformative wave is sweeping across arenas once dominated by men. At its forefront is Kho Kho, a game deeply rooted in India’s cultural fabric, now metamorphosing into a fiercely competitive domain where agility, strategy, and perseverance dictate success.

For decades, societal norms relegated women to the sidelines in physical sports, discouraging their participation. However, Kho Kho has become a catalyst for change, empowering women to defy stereotypes and excel in a field historically seen as male-dominated.
“In our region, girls were once discouraged from playing Kho Kho due to rigid mindsets. People questioned how a girl could wear shorts and participate in the game,” shared Priyanka Ingle, captain of India’s victorious women’s Kho Kho team at the 2025 World Cup.
The impact of this cultural shift is profound. “Girls who had previously quit Kho Kho for various reasons started returning to practice, motivated by my achievement,” Priyanka added. The sport now garners recognition and support, with parents increasingly endorsing their daughters’ athletic pursuits.

The Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) has been instrumental in fostering this transformation. Through inclusive training programs, expert coaching, and equal access to resources, KKFI ensures that talent flourishes irrespective of gender. The recent World Cup exemplified this commitment, with both men’s and women’s trophies symbolizing gender parity—a testament to Kho Kho’s role in advancing equality.
The accolades bestowed upon the victorious women players highlight a shift in societal attitudes. “People in my village now encourage their daughters to pursue sports as a career,” remarked Magai Majhi from Odisha, reflecting on the changing perceptions catalyzed by Kho Kho’s rising prominence.

Beyond cultural recognition, Kho Kho is opening doors to economic opportunities. Government jobs and endorsement deals are now viable avenues for athletes, transforming Kho Kho from a pastime to a profession.
The evolution of women’s participation in Kho Kho signifies more than athletic achievement; it signifies societal progress. Indigenous games are redefining empowerment, dismantling traditional barriers, and paving the way for a future where talent, not gender, determines success.
As Kho Kho continues to gain global recognition, it stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its players—a revolution unfolding one match at a time.
