Patna: It is often said that talent and determination can overcome any obstacle. This adage came to life as Monika Sah led the Indian women’s team to victory in the Kho-Kho World Cup held in Delhi. Hailing from a modest background in Dimha village, Bhagalpur, Monica’s extraordinary journey from adversity to global recognition is nothing short of inspirational.

The Indian team, under Monika’s captaincy, clinched the World Cup title in a thrilling final match against Nepal on January 19. Donning jersey number 11, Monica played a pivotal role, scoring six points and guiding her team to a historic win. The tournament, which began on January 13, saw Monika delivering consistent, standout performances, culminating in this crowning achievement.
Monika, the daughter of Binod Sah and Jura Devi, grew up in a mud-and-tile house in Gopalpur block’s Navgachiya subdivision. Her family’s financial struggles were immense—her father occasionally drove a rickshaw or sold vegetables to make ends meet. Despite these hardships, Monika’s talent and determination shone through.
Binod Sah, overwhelmed with pride, shared his feelings about his daughter’s achievements. “Monika has been passionate about sports since she was in Year 6. Initially, we encouraged her to focus on studies, but her determination to pursue sports never wavered. Today, she has made not just our family but the entire nation proud.”

Her mother, Jura Devi, echoed these sentiments while highlighting the family’s challenges. “There was a time when Monika didn’t even have proper shoes to play in. Our financial condition is dire. I still cook on a wood stove because we haven’t received benefits from government schemes. Despite everything, Monika remained focused and dedicated to her dream. Today, she has shown the world what perseverance can achieve.”
Monika’s rise has not only brought glory to her family but has also placed Bihar on the international sports map. However, despite her remarkable achievement, the Bihar government has yet to acknowledge her contributions.
From a mud house in Bhagalpur to the world stage, Monika Sah’s journey is a testament to grit, talent, and unwavering determination. Her story serves as an inspiration to countless young athletes across the country, proving that no dream is too big when pursued with passion and perseverance.
