In a major development for Indian sports and the growing global movement of Kho Kho, the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Department of Sports (Governance-1 Section), has officially renewed the Annual Recognition of the Kho Kho Federation of India for the year 2026.
The renewal of recognition reaffirms the federation’s position as the officially recognized apex governing body for Kho Kho in India and marks another historic milestone in the sport’s journey towards modernization, professionalism, and international expansion.
The recognition has been granted under the leadership of:
- Mr. Sudhanshu Mittal – President
- Mr. Upkar Singh Virk – General Secretary
- Mr. Govind Sharma – Treasurer
This achievement reflects the continuous efforts of the federation in strengthening the governance structure of the sport, promoting athlete development, expanding grassroots participation, and taking Indian Kho Kho to the global stage.
Over the last few years, Kho Kho has witnessed remarkable growth under the administration of the current leadership. From the successful organization of national and international tournaments to the expansion of the sport across multiple continents, the federation has played a crucial role in elevating the image of Kho Kho worldwide. The sport has increasingly gained international attention, attracting participation from countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.
The renewal of annual recognition by the Government of India also serves as a strong message regarding the legitimacy and authority of the officially recognized national federation. The decision comes as a significant setback for unauthorized associations and unofficial bodies attempting to create confusion within the sport without any official recognition or approval from the Government of India.
Sports experts and stakeholders believe that this recognition will further strengthen the confidence of athletes, coaches, technical officials, state units, and sponsors associated with the sport. It also ensures smoother functioning of national programs, talent identification initiatives, coaching development activities, and future international collaborations.
Under the visionary leadership of President Mr. Sudhanshu Mittal, the federation has focused on bringing professionalism, transparency, and global outreach to Kho Kho. General Secretary Mr. Upkar Singh Virk has played a key role in organizational development and expansion initiatives, while Treasurer Mr. Govind Sharma has contributed towards strengthening the administrative and financial structure of the federation.
The recognition renewal is expected to provide a major boost to upcoming national championships, international tournaments, player welfare programs, grassroots development projects, and future global events related to Kho Kho. It also reinforces India’s commitment to promoting indigenous sports at both national and international levels.
With growing international participation, rising fan engagement, and increasing media attention, Kho Kho is rapidly emerging as one of the fastest-growing traditional sports in the world. The renewed recognition for 2026 stands as a symbol of stability, progress, and the bright future of Indian Kho Kho.
As the federation moves forward with renewed confidence and government backing, the focus remains on building a stronger sporting ecosystem, empowering athletes, and continuing the mission of making Kho Kho a truly global sport.
